About Chiropractic

Chiropractic is a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the functions of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation. (World Federation of Chiropractic, 2001)

Chiropractors treat problems with joints, bones and muscles, and the effects they have on the nervous system. Working on all the joints of the body, concentrating particularly on the spine, they use their hands to make often gentle, specific adjustments (the chiropractic word for manipulation) to improve the efficiency of the nervous system and release the body’s natural healing ability.

There is currently a strong bias towards an integrated approach to healthcare. We have many cross referrals from other Therapists and General Practitioners who recognise the benefits of our approach, although the majority of our patients are individuals who refer themselves.

We are able to refer directly for X-ray and MRI investigations when required.

Our Chiropractors are registered with the General Chiropractic Council and members of the British Chiropractic Association.

Frequently asked questions

Is chiropractic just for 'bad backs'?

Chiropractors treat low back pain (both chronic and acute), neck pain, shoulder pain (including Adhesive capsulitis), headaches (including migraines) as well as other joint-related conditions. A range of musculoskeletal conditions including biomechanical injuries and postural imbalances are helped by chiropractic care.

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. Registered Chiropractors are able to assess and diagnose musculoskeletal conditions without the need for a GP referral. Chiropractors at Thornbury Chiropractic Clinic are certified to take X-rays of the spine and skeletal joints and have the facility to refer directly to MRI and CT scans if required.

Can I claim money back on my private health insurance scheme?

Yes. Thornbury Chiropractic Clinic is registered for insurance with most of the major insurance companies. You may, however, need to consult with your individual insurance scheme. Some policies require you to be referred in by your GP or a consultant, so it is always recommended to check first. If claiming through medical insurance please inform reception when booking in your initial consultation.

Can babies, children and elderly persons be treated?

Children under the age of 18 are treated in the presence of a parent or guardian. Due care is taken with elderly patients, taking into consideration Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis. A full medical history is taken on initial consultation to cover issues such as current/previous medication that may have impact on the treatment provided.

How many sessions will I need?

This will depend on your particular condition, the severity of your condition and the length of time you have had the condition. Different people respond at different rates, and some of this also depends on how much of your Chiropractor’s advice you follow. The Chiropractor will inform you of your Diagnosis, Prognosis and Treatment Plan once they have examined you.
